Ok, folks. July is more than half over and wouldn't you know it, I get the urge to make afghans! It's hot in mid-July in Arkansas! Why do I want to cover myself with an afghan? But when I get the urge to create, I better go with it and just create.
I was looking around the other day and realized I am swamped with yarn. Not whole skeins, just a lot of odds and ends. Some of them are current colors while others are old enough to be called vintage (I guess). Some of it is from the 1970's and 1980's. Does that qualify for vintage? I don't know but to feel the yarn takes me back to when I first started crocheting and knitting (in the 70's).
I woke up a couple of days ago with the idea to use up some of this yarn by making what I call a scrap afghan. This time I choose a hexagon flower with bright yellow centers. I'm sure if I try real hard, I can make the entire afghan without repeating any of the flower colors. I am outlining each flower with white and then setting them together with black. The black and white really make the color of the flowers pop! I am loving it but will probably end up giving it away to one of the ladies who works at the oncology center where I took all of my treatments last year and the early part of this year. I am sure she will appreciate it and I can share my God given talent with someone else. I have been so blessed with Christian doctors and nurses as well as the receptionists in the various offices I have visited while on the cancer journey. Thank you, Lord, for all the blessings these people give to each and every one of us that crosses paths with them on a daily basis.
But I digress. Back to the creating process. After working on the afghan for a day or so and looking at the hexagon flowers, I got the idea to make some more hot pads. (I don't really know why I am so obsessed with hot pads and pot holders this year. But at least it isn't more dish cloths! I made close to 200 last year!) I made a real pretty purple and pink one but it was smaller than I really wanted. After putting in and taking out for a couple of hours, I finally came up with a design I love. It has a double thickness crocheted with 100% cotton yarn (which is one of my favorite in case you can't tell from all the items posted on this web page). It is not really suitable for removing hot pots, pans, skillets or casserole dishes from the oven, stove top or microwave oven but will be more than thick enough to protect the table top or counter. And it looks so pretty! I plan to make 10 to 12 different colors. They will be added to the website as soon as I get them finished. So be sure to check back often.
